Kitchen Renovation Regrets That Begin in the Plan

Prevent common kitchen regrets by testing layout, appliance doors, preparation space, storage, lighting, extraction, cleaning and service access before ordering.

The expensive kitchen regrets are usually decisions that became permanent before anyone tested them.

A cabinet colour can be repainted or replaced. Moving a sink, shrinking an island or adding extraction after handover is harder.

Regret 1: the new kitchen repeats the old conflict

Draw every appliance, drawer and door open. Add stools and through-traffic. If the plan only works when everything is closed, it will not work during cooking and cleaning.

Regret 2: there is no uninterrupted preparation area

A large total bench length can be broken by sinks, cooktops and appliances. Protect one clear zone near water, bins and cooking.

Regret 3: the island became an obstacle

An island should earn its floor area through preparation, storage or seating. Mark it at full size before services are committed. A peninsula or clear aisle may suit a narrower room better.

Regret 4: storage was designed from empty cabinets

Inventory food, cookware, appliances and recycling. Measure large items and allocate daily things to reachable drawers or shelves. More cabinet volume does not guarantee better access.

Regret 5: appliances were selected after cabinetry

Exact models control openings, ventilation, hinge clearances, electrical load, plumbing and replacement access. Record model numbers and installation instructions before final joinery drawings.

Regret 6: decorative lighting replaced task light

Check shadows over benches and glare from polished surfaces. Provide focused preparation lighting and controllable general light. Pendants are optional.

Regret 7: extraction was treated as a cabinet insert

Resolve rangehood capacity, capture area, duct route and outdoor discharge before ceilings and cabinetry close. The NCC includes kitchen ventilation provisions and appliance instructions also apply.

Regret 8: maintenance was assumed

Test finish samples with fingerprints, oil and the approved cleaning method. Ask how benchtop joins, cabinet edges, splashback corners and flooring transitions are cleaned and repaired.

Regret 9: concealed components cannot be reached

Keep valves, traps, filters, outlets and appliance connections accessible. A seamless elevation is not useful if routine service damages the kitchen.

Regret 10: the quote did not describe the whole renovation

Compare demolition, protection, trades, cabinetry, surfaces, flooring, paint, permits, waste and handover—not only the cabinet supply. Consumer Affairs Victoria recommends comparing quotes for the same plans and specifications.

Where Bluestone fits

Bluestone tests kitchen decisions against the full construction scope before manufacture. See how to plan a kitchen renovation.

Victoria adopted NCC 2025 on 1 May 2026, with transition arrangements. Ask your building surveyor or relevant practitioner which edition and Victorian requirements apply to your renovation; requirements vary with the building and proposed work.
